Eagle Harbor Saturday

Just a quick note that the kids and I will be working as honorary booksellers at Eagle Harbor Books this Saturday, November 29th. Our shift is from noon to 1:00pm. This is part of the Indies First promotion to encourage support of local, independent bookstores. (What, exactly, my presence there will do to encourage support remains to be seen.) But it’s a fun event, and fortunately, there will be lots of other writers–David Guterson, Jonathan Evison, Lance Weller among them–throughout the day as well.

I will be there pushing Closer to the Ground…er, I mean…suggesting good books from other authors for holiday gift giving, and will be happy to sign or inscribe books as well. Even the ones I didn’t write. Did I mention what a great gift Closer to the Ground makes? Skyla and Weston will be on hand to consult with parents or grandparents about books their kids or grandkids would enjoy.

Come on by, shop for gifts, buy something for yourself, or just say hi.

Eagle Harbor Books This Saturday

Just a quick reminder, I will be “working” as a bookseller at Eagle Harbor Books on Bainbridge Island this Saturday from 3:00 to 5:00pm. My fellow guest booksellers during the day will include David Guterson, Lance Weller, Jonathan Evison, Jennie Shortridge, Garth Stein, Carol Cassela, Rebecca Wells, Kelli Russell Agodon and more. Pretty much a Who’s Who of local and regional big-time authors…and me.

If you’re looking for signed and/or inscribed books for holiday gifts, this a great opportunity to find something for everyone on your list. Come on down and support your local indie bookstore on Small Business Saturday.

Warning: Shameless self-promtional message to follow. Have I mentioned that Closer to the Ground makes a perfect gift for anyone who reads? Or eats? Or loves the outdoors, or has kids, or grandkids? Or breathes? Ha! If you’d like a signed–or better yet, personalized and inscribed–copy of Closer to the Ground for the holidays, I will be at the following locations over the next month or so:

November 30th, 3:00-5:00pm, Eagle Harbor Books, Bainbridge Island, WA. This is a great event, created by Sherman Alexie, to promote holiday shopping at independent bookstores. Local authors will work as guest booksellers, give recommendations and sign books. It’s an honor to be a part of the fun. Come on down, meet some famous authors (and me) and help support our local indie bookstore.

December 6th, 5:00-8:00pm, Charrette Holiday Pop-Up Store, 130 Winslow Way, Bainbridge Island, WA. Charrette features a collection of local and regional artists and their creations. Products range from artisanal chocolates to jewelry, fine art and lamp shades. Pretty much one-stop shopping for everyone on your list. I will be there signing books for the First Friday Art Walk.

December 11th, 6:00-7:30pm, Albany Public Library, Albany, OR. I will be giving a talk, reading from Closer to the Ground and signing books at this cool event presented by the Greenbelt Land Trust, Calapooia Watershed Council, Ten Rivers Food Web and the Albany Public Library.

December 11th, 8:00-??:??pm, Cascadia Fly Shop, Corvallis, OR. Fish stories, fly tying, book talk and signing presented by the Bluebacks Chapter of Trout Unlimited, all in my old home town. If that’s not enough incentive, I hear they’ll have beer on tap at this event.

I think that’s about it for now. I will try to remember to post reminders as the events get closer. If you have the time, come on out to one or more of the events. It’ll be great to meet you in person and shoot the breeze. And here’s an idea: Buy 20 copies of the book, have me inscribe each with a personalized inscription, and BOOM! You’re done with your holiday shopping for the year. At least now I can tell my publisher I tried…

Adventures In Bookland II

Well, the maiden voyage of the good ship Closer To The Ground launched last night at Eagle Harbor Books. We had a good crowd–about 40 people–on a rainy night when the Seahawks were playing on TV, so I was stoked. I was grateful to see so many familiar faces. It was also unexpectedly nerve-wracking, but I think it ended up going okay. This is a picture of me still signing books after they put all the chairs away, so I figure that’s a good sign.

We also had some nice media coverage this week. If you want to read the interview with the Portland Oregonian, click HERE. For the Q & A in The New York Times travel section, click HERE.

And now…on to Elliott Bay Book Co. in Seattle this Sunday (2:00pm), then Grass Roots Books in Corvallis, Oregon on Wednesday the 24th (7:00pm) and Powell’s City of Books in Portland on Thursday the 25th (7:30pm). Come on out! It Would be great to meet you in person.

This Week’s Events

Just a quick reminder, I will be reading from and talking about Closer To The Ground at Eagle Harbor Books this Thursday, October 18th, 7:30pm.

On Sunday, October 21st, I will be at Elliott Bay Books in Seattle at 2:00pm. Then on to Oregon the following week. The full tour schedule is on the website here, but I will try to keep up with the reminders as well.

The more the merrier. Looking forward to meeting you. Hope you are all well.
